life cycle of a volcano
Geologists classify a volcano's stage of activity using the terms active, dormant, and extinct.
An active volcano is either currently erupting or is showing signs that it may erupt in the near future.
A dormant volcano is like a sleeping volcano- it won't be erupting for a while, but it is expected to erupt sometime in the future. An extinct volcano, or a dead volcano, is very unlikely to ever erupt again. |
